My freshman year at Kansas State University, my roommate and I decided to learn to play Bridge. Bridge was a very popular game in the 60’s. With a small tri-fold Goren card for our source of Bridge information and a large cardboard box as our “table”, we played Bridge. I married after college and my husband was with AT&T. We were frequently transferred to different cities in Kansas. (There were 13 moves before he retired). Playing Bridge was a great way to make new friends. I had never been introduced to Duplicate Bridge until we moved to Topeka in the early 90’s. I joined a group that played at the Woman’s Club. It was here that I met Shari Krentzel. She was an excellent player who wanted a tournament partner, so I said ok and joined ACBL in 2006. Shari taught me new conventions and I said goodbye to Goren Bridge. It was exciting playing competitive games in tournaments and earning points for playing Bridge. By 2008 I had my Life Masters. I had a bad stroke in 2012 and thought my competitive playing days were over, but my partner and Bridge friends were a source of encouragement to me and after 1 1/2 years, I was playing again. I have made many wonderful friends through my years of playing Duplicate. It is a great game.
